Pedro de Oraá was born in 1931 in Havana. He studied at the San Alejadro Academy of Fine Arts. De Oraá, alongside his wife and fellow artist, Loló Soldevilla, were founders of the Galeria Color-Luz, an art space in Cuba which focused on abstract art. He is also one of the founders of the widely influential group, Los Diez Pintores Cubanos (the Ten Concrete Painters), alongside other important artists such as his wife, Loló Soldevilla, Sandú Darié, Luis Martínez Pedro, and José María Mijares, which served as the vanguard for a new movement of abstraction on the island.
Works by De Oraá are included in the collections of important institutions including Cuba’s National Fine Arts Museum; Chopo University in Mexico City; the Godwin-Ternbach Museum of Queen’s College in New York; the Museum of Finest Cuban Arts, Vienna; The Pompidou Center in France; and the Ludwig Museum in Germany. In 2015, De Oraá was awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plástica, the highest honor for a visual artist in the country. Pedro de Oraá passed away in 2020.
