Silvia Fernández Arrojo was born on May 7 , 1918 in the city of Havana. She studied drawing and painting at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts , where she would eventually become rofessor of Drawing and Painting in 1941. During her life, she was the recipient of several awards, including Honorable Mention, XXII Salón del Círculo de Bellas Artes de La Habana, for her painting Dormiendo, 1940; Silver Medal, XXIII Salón del Circulo, 1941, for her portrait Angelina; and a Bronze Medal in the Drawing Contest for Poster Programs of the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra . She exhibited in Cuba, with shows at Havana’s prestigious Lyceum in 1943, 1949, and in 1951, and also in the United States at the National Museum in Washington D.C., 1947, and at the Washington Art Gallery, Miami Beach, in 1948.
