Cuban Art

Tomás Sánchez (b. 1948) was born in the province
of Cienfuegos, Cuba. His interest in art began at an early age.
In 1964, he moved to Havana to study painting at the
San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts. Two years later,
he transferred to the newly founded Escuela Nacional de Arte
(National School for the Arts) whose curriculum was more
up-to-date with contemporary art tendencies. In 1971 he
graduated from this institution and that same year
garnered his first award, First Prize in Graphic Art from
the National Young Artists’ Salon. In 1980 the artist
obtained the prestigious Joan Miró International Drawing
Award (granted by the Miró foundation in Barcelona)
and this launched his career into the international arena.
His first retrospective exhibition was at the National
Museum of Fine Arts in Havana in 1985. In 1989, Sánchez left
the island and went to México. The artist now lives and
works in Costa Rica.
