In 1964, renowned Dutch art critic Hans Redeker
commented referring to Acosta Leon’s talent:
“He carries within all the traits that belong to
the greats of today and the celebrities of tomorrow.”
Painting and surviving on art alone is an enormous
challenge for most of the artists in the world. In the case
of the gifted master painter, for all his struggles, that
goal was accomplished. Angel Acosta León is internationally
recognized as a surrealist artist with great sensibility
and an arduous passion for painting. He spent a great part
of his life battling his fears, his obsessions, all the
while, yearning for recognition as a creator. The artist
died too young, when he was only thirty four.

A taciturn and depressive person, Acosta León was
known to avoid contact with people for days at a time,
and dedicated long hours of his free time to painting
–especially sleepless nocturnal hours. His renditions,
although not totally free of narrative, were more
focused on the inherent power of color, light and
form to create oneiric and desolate atmospheres.

The artist painted in free form manner what he saw and crafted
his artwork in an array of mediums: canvas, paper, cardboard,
plywood, masonite, photo paper, sheets of newspapers and
magazines. He rendered self-portraits, portraits of friends,
landscapes, rooftops, parks, and ordinary objects (almost
always worn or damaged), such as: coffee machines, coffee
sieves, wheels, sugar cane juice extractors, carriages, ships,
circus tents, banners, glass bottles, grandfather clocks, rock
candy, palm trees, carts, tractors, cranes, bicycles, rickety
iron beds, marionettes, toys, and all sort of amorphous or
metamorphic figures.

The artist had important expositions in the following prestigious
galleries: Galerie Charpentier, Paris; Galerie Du Dragon, Paris;

Yves Tanguy, Horst Antes, and Roberto Matta, who befriended
Acosta León and was very supportive of his art.
In December of 1964, as the ship on which he traveled back to
Cuba approached the island, Acosta León committed suicide by
jumping over the vessel’s railing. In the years since his passing,
the artist’s work has been exhibited at several distinguished
international institutions of the arts, including the National
Museum of Fine Arts in Havana; Cuban Museum of Arts and
Culture, Miami; National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile;
National Institute of Fine Arts, Mexico City; Palace of Culture,

Sarduy wrote in 1990: "Acosta León's paintings seem to
