Antonio Vidal was born in Havana, Cuba in 1928 and died in that same city in 2013. He was a founding member of the Group of the Eleven, who erupted onto the island's art scene with abstract contemporary art and a manifest desire to break with the figurative tradition of Cuban art. In 1999, the Ministry of Culture of Cuba recognized Vidal with the National Award of Fine Arts, the highest distinction in the country for an artist.
