Born in 1963, Esson is one of the most painterly artists of his generation. His work exudes his pleasure in painting; however, his subject matter denies the pleasurable, hedonistic surface. His images have caused great scandal and controversy in Cuba. He now lives in the U.S. and exhibits internationally. Esson's paintings are grotesque. His painting is strong enough to give his creatures a presence in their own right, devoid of illustrative references and weaknesses. His beings seem to live in mythical primogenital time.
