José Arburu Morell was born in Havana, Cuba in 1864. He studied at the San Alejandro Academy in 1877 and continued his training there until 1886. It was during this period that he traveled to Spain and enrolled in the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. There he worked as an apprentice to Manuel Domínguez and together they decorated the Palacio de Murga de los marqueses de Linares. In 1888 he exhibited a painting entitled La Primera Misa en America and earned an award in a competition organized by the institution La Ilustración Española y Americana.
