Juan Miguel Suárez Rodriguez was born on May 12, 1976, in Pinar del Río, Cuba. He graduated from the Vocational School of Arts in Pinar del Río in 1991 and from the Graduate Institute of Industrial Design in Havana in 2001. The artist presently resides in Pinar del Río, Cuba.
In 2004, the exhibit Con la gente de esta tierra... inspired these words:
Juan Miguel presents a corpus able to revalue and revisit different aesthetic and philosophical propositions with regard to the portrait, exposing a strong counterpoint between tradition and contemporaneity. Thus, defying all possible entanglements, the artist adheres to good palette and brush painting, but with the possibility of a transgression in the conceptual plane. Existential preoccupations and the psychological heft of his characters surpass the technical virtuosity that, without a doubt, is patent in the structure of his works… When we interact with Juan Miguel's paintings we observe, in each look, the simple verses and the more complex; there is the lion and the deer; in each look the apostle [Martí] is there. In each look is the heart of the artist, exposing in turn the heart of each character, palpitant betwixt light and shadow.
