“In 1947, Portocarrero begins to work
on a group of pastels that occupy him
all of that year and are prolonged
sporadically until 1949... in this
collection of pastels it is possible
to find still life’s with flowers,
images from catholic iconography,
interiors with elaborate screen
panels, groups of dancers, harlequins,
and also, the exceptional version of
a native satyr... Brilliant colors
contained by black lines establish a
distorted accent that configures the
grotesque and agitated character of
these works, reflecting moments of
dramatic expressionism.”

Graziella Pogolotti and Ramón Vázquez,
René Portocarrero, Editorial Henschel,
Berlin, 1987.
