The jagged, confrontational expressionism of the artist’s early works were
plainly informed by his mentor, Antonia Eiriz, the charming grotesquerie of
master painter James Ensor, and by classical genre painting, all expressed
through the cultural lens of Cuba’s tumultuous social and political climate
in the latter 20th century.
