Armando Menocal Curriculum
1863- 1942) Descendant from an illustrious and cultivated Cuban family, Menocal was born in Havana, on July 8, 1863. This interesting artistic figure of the painting of the Island started his studies in the San Alejandro School, under the guidance of the Professor Miguel Meleros. His parents sent him to Spain in 1880 so he could complete his education. There, he met important exponents of the arts and letters like Sorolla and Menendez Pelayo. He exposed successfully and won prizes in several national exhibits in that European country. He went back to Cuba ten years later to join the Liberator Army at the beginning of the Independence War. When the conflict ended, he returned to San Alejandro, where he taught the subject Landscape. In 1927 he was named Principal of this school and in 1940 he was nominated Emeritus Professor of the Institution. Menocal made important works of art that embellish walls and murals of the Presidential Palace, the City Hall and the University of Havana. Moreover, he was Member of the National Academy of Arts and Letters of Havana. He was a brilliant and eminent landscape, portrait and history-scenes painter. He passed away in Havana, on September 28, 1942, leaving a profound trace of light and beauty in the history of the Cuban arts.
