Jorge Arche (1905-1956) was one of the renowned

artists that conformed the first generation of

Cuban Vanguardia painters.

He studied at the Academia Villate for five years

and in 1923 he continued his artistic education

at San Alejandro Academy in Havana, from where
he later graduated. He won awards and accolades
in 1935 on the First and Second National Exposition
of Paintings and Sculptures in Havana, in 1935-1937,
and various more during his life time.

His preference for and success in the genre of
portraiture quickly generated much respect and
admiration amongst the progressive, intelligentsia
of the country during those years, recognizing him
as the best interpreter of the physiognomy and the
psychological traits of his fellow artists, poets,

art critics and intellectuals.
