Clara Morera’s works deal with a broad spectrum of myth, ritual, literature, social causes, faith, and culture.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the
artist has been occupied with her Revelations series,
which seeks to connect modern life and current events
to the apocalyptic text of The Book of Revelation.
Morera’s John the Apostle and The Book of the Seven Seals, 2024, is based on Revelation 10:8-10, which describes the prophet John being instructed by an angel to eat a scroll with seven seals on it, each seal corresponding to a catastrophic event. The scroll John eats is sweet to
the taste but bitter to the stomach. The enigmatic
act of eating the scroll symbolizes the metaphorical
act of internalizing, understanding its message, and
making it a part of oneself, despite its potentially
bitter or difficult content. In the context of today’s information age, "consuming the scroll" signifies
accepting the constant news about a world in crisis,
even if when it is difficult or uncomfortable to confront.
In John the Apostle and The Book of the Seven Seals
(2024), John is depicted flanked by angels amidst a
backdrop of war and disaster. With his hands raised
towards the sky, John reconciles with these harsh
realities, embodying a pursuit of peace amidst the
hard truths of existence.
