Much of Casas’ landscape work evokes the intense and
welcoming blues of Monet’s maritime paintings, the hazy
lyricism of Eugene Boudin, and the peaceful desolation
of Courbet’s rocky beaches, taken to a further point
of abstraction by bold and vigorous strokes of paint.
The artist’s muse is the Caribbean, with its tropical
light and windswept waters. Casas’ Cuba is a world
of distance and yearning, a paradise lost where color,
light, and form crystallize into a stirring and
nostalgic vision.
