Yasiel Elizagaray, born in 1987, is a most
promising star from the younger generation
of contemporary Cuban talents.
Elizagaray masterly uses the tools of
grotesque expressionism by subverting the
classical beauty of infancy, youth and
femininity into distorted, unsettling, and
maddening forms that expose deep emotional
and psychological imbalance and anxiety
in his characters.
The artist's application of heavy impastos
and thinner layers of paint adds to the
tension of the composition.
His hopeless involuntary sitters are
inspired by everyday people that he sees
and imagines from his immediate
surroundings.
