Leading Contemporary Cuban artist Juan Roberto Diago has unveiled at the 2026 Venice Biennale his most recent sculpture series Hombres Libres, where the artist again examines issues of racial identity, the scars of a slave legacy, and the unfavorable social realities of today’s “people of color.” As South African art critic Adilson De Oliveira has stated, the abstract idea of freedom as a legal construct does not engulf the basic elements of life, such as the access to decent maintenance as well as survival in the context of trauma, violence, racial discrimination and systemic economic, cultural and
social pressures.
Juan Roberto Diago’s artworks have been present at Cernuda Arte since the inaugural exhibit at the gallery in the year 2000. Later, he presented his one-artist show My History is Your History at Cernuda Arte in July 2001. His production is now well-known in the United States, where he is rightly recognized as a leading figure in
the Contemporary art world.
