“The paintings of Peláez not only revolved around still lifes of flowers, fruits, and fish but also the human figure and more specifically, women. The figurative gouaches and paintings of the 1940s and 1950s are about stately women in an architectural environment... In these paintings, Peláez uses a loose version of cubism, particularly indebted to Picasso in regard to the representation of the human figure, to explore her most immediate environment and way of life... The subject of two women appears often in Peláez’s paintings of this time and seems to refer to her sisters and possibly herself... the female figures, given their activities, may refer to her sister Carmen, who taught literature, and to Amelia herself, who raised birds.”
-Professor Juan A. Martínez Ph.D.

“Little by little the tables and fruit began to find a continuation in the colonial stained-glass windows, and to these were added embroidered tablecloths, capitals, wickerwork, tufts, and fringes in an infinite interweaving sketched in a continuous line that invaded the whole picture, now widening, then narrowing, leaving zones of solid, brilliant color in a many-colored mosaic.”

“I have no doubt that Braque, Picasso, and Matisse had a lot to do with my choice and approach, but the reason I paint my still lives based on fruits and architectural elements is because it has been evident for some time that our colonial architecture developed some of its own motifs, or better, its own manner of employing certain motifs that are found in the architecture of other countries.”
