Tomás Sánchez (b. 1948) was born in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba.
His interest in art began at an early age. In 1964, he moved to Havana to study
painting at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts. Two years later,
he transferred to the newly founded Escuela Nacional de Arte (National School
for the Arts) whose curriculum was more up-to-date with contemporary art
tendencies. In 1971 he graduated from this institution and that same year
garnered his first award, First Prize in Graphic Art from the National
Young Artists’ Salon. In 1980 the artist obtained the prestigious Joan Miró
International Drawing Award (granted by the Miró foundation in Barcelona)
and this launched his career into the international arena. His first
retrospective exhibition was at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana
in 1985. In 1989, Sánchez left the island and went to México. The artist
now lives and works in Costa Rica.

Tomás Sánchez is best recognized for his paintings of exquisitely detailed
landscapes. The painter himself has stated that breathtaking renditions
emanate from his mind. Just like Henri Rousseau once said that he was “in
a dream” every time he went to the tropical gardens in the Jardin des
Plantes in Paris, Sánchez has declared in an interview that, “when I enter
a state of meditation, it is as if I’m in a jungle or a forest”.

Sánchez paints tropical-forest scenes that are seemingly hyperreal,
but in essence belong to a dreamworld of his own. Among his
signature motifs we find, panoramas of magnificent trees draped
with vines, wrapped in moss; painstakingly depicted hills and
grass; sunbathed vistas; waterfall sceneries – riveting depictions
of nature that are immersed in solemn silence and spirituality.

The jagged, confrontational expressionism of the artist’s early works were
plainly informed by his mentor, Antonia Eiriz, the charming grotesquerie of
master painter James Ensor, and by classical genre painting, all expressed
through the cultural lens of Cuba’s tumultuous social and political climate
    in the latter 20th century.
