“In 1947, Portocarrero begins to work
on a group of pastels that occupy him
all of that year and are prolonged
    sporadically until 1949... in this
collection of pastels it is possible
to find still life’s with flowers,
    images from catholic iconography,
    interiors with elaborate screen
    panels, groups of dancers, harlequins,
and also, the exceptional version of
    a native satyr... Brilliant colors
contained by black lines establish a
    distorted accent that configures the
    grotesque and agitated character of
    these works, reflecting moments of
    dramatic expressionism.”

“The eloquence of the flower does not
reach us by its form or its fragrance,
but when we are aware of its identity
... A painting is like a child or like

is named Juan, and that the flower is
a rose or a hibiscus, then we know
nothing of the child or the flower.
And the same of a painting, if we only
    pay attention to its representation.”

“One of Ponce’s only attempts at
    panoramic compositions is Procesión
    (Procession), 1940’s. This impressive
painting shows a devout procession from
a certain distance, in a desolate and
    expansive landscape. Closer to the
viewer, we see the backs of a group of
    female spectators kneeling and looking
towards the long and seemingly slow
    caravan of hardly identifiable figures,
who are carrying a devotional statue
    and other religious objects.”

“Thanks to Lam, the preposterous, rugged
and uninspired forms that blocked the
road are blown up by the great suns of
dynamite. Thanks to Lam, the primal
spirit - and by that, I mean the
sentiment, the dream, the heredity - is
    projected and illuminated... Nourished
with sea salt, sun, rain, marvelous and
sinister moons, Wifredo Lam is the one
who calls the modern world back to the
    original terror and fervor.”
